Changes.

Life is full of changes, some for better, some for worse, some expected some unexpected, and some are just completely necessary.   This is one of those necessary changes, both unexpected and for better.  The seeds just weren't doing so well in the egg carton home, and we just didn't have enough room to grow all the stuff we wanted.  A trip to William Dam Seeds to pick up our seed order inspired a new direction.

Soil and water mix for the seeds new home.  This larger tray has deeper sections to hold more soil and should allow the sprouts to grow stronger in preparation for transplanting into the garden.

Mmmmmm! Nourishing soil!

New seeds!  Green Zebra Tomatoes, Pickling Cucumbers, Cherry Tomatoes, Bunching Onions, San Marzano Tomatoes and more!

Behold!  Life in its infancy!

Delicate hand planting ensures that each little seed will treated with love and respect.

Now, we wait.  And water.  And wait.

  1. I just want to say that I am enjoying your blog. I have recently made some of the same discoveries about North American food production and am making adjustments as well. Its nice to read about someone else who is on this journey.

I had some trouble using the egg cartons, too. I found instructions for making my own pots out of newspaper, I have expanded this to using notebook and copy paper (from past semester's notes). I am a lot happier with this method than the egg cartons because as you mention, the egg cartons just aren't deep enough.

  4. Wonderful photographs ... I particularly like the Hewitt's goat milk bottle acting as vase, it deepens the narrative. Perhaps an exhibition of the collection of photos around harvest.
